One can look towards the DC Area transit agencies for help with having a "1 card pays for all" type of system. Of course, the Smartrip doesn't have monthly/weekly/daily pass capabilities yet, but I hear it was very hard just to get the system to work in its current state, free transfers and all!I think something like an "outside account" has to be created for a "Northeast Hyride Card" to be created. Plus, northeastern properties have widely varying fare policies. If they aren't consolidated somehow, it could be very complicated. However, the immense headaches developing such a program could really be worth it...but there needs to be enough stable funding for ALL AGENCIES for this project to work. It'll be very tough for agencies because they are not in the business of processing transactions, etc...but moving people most efficiently. |
