KCram 2500 will be able to help you out more on the historical side, but I can tell you that this line (the Doylestown/Frenchtown/Lambertville) service is a commuter run that was formerly a NJT service (whether they still directly operated it after 1983 when NJT was created I am not sure) - thus why you see a few D4500's on this service - it is a commuter service that compliments their Allentown/Bethlehem services via 22 in NJ to New York and Newark Airport/JFK - from what I know it is very reliable and they have a good operation and have a very strong patron base, particularly from Doylestown and the NJ side of the route.
