The center door's placement some 20 feet closer to the operator makes it more likely the driver will notice someone boarding at that door illegally than at the rearmost door. Thus it's more fair to say the increase in fare evasion could be expected to be on the order of half again or so. But then maybe it's about time to get rid of the driver being responsible for babysitting the passengers and go to a proof of payment system on most bus lines. It's safer and far more effective than sticking with an outdated arrangement which requires the driver to multitask and allows a fare beating passenger a free ride once they're on the bus. |
