NJTA's route structure is based on NYCT's route structure.

M-Morris
S-Sussex
W-Warren
E-Essex
B-Bergen
P-Passaic
H-Hudson (Many routes did not have numbers and were assigned numbers upon takeover)
U-Union
So-Somerset
Mo-Monmouth
Mx-Middlesex

X was used at one point to identify Route 3 and Turnpike Express routes until they were made open-door since many were running local buses (M103 and M104 come to mind) anyway.
