The purchase of 900 hybrid artics is contingent on a lot of stuff that's far from reality. First of all, the funding simply ain't there. To begin with, our state government is seriously dysfunctional. The guv and the House and Senate leaders are behaving like spoiled brats and barely even speak with one another. Understandably, they're widely disliked by many of the other legislators, as well as lots of us who elected them. So state funding for capital programs such as transit won't happen any time soon. Hence, no federal dollars either. Oh, did I mention that the state's unable to even pay it's bills? Second, the CTA doesn't have the storage capacity for 900 more artics. Most of the eight depots (actually, we call them garages) are already full. There are no plans for additional yards. Last, I really don't believe that there are enough routes in the system to warrant the use of 900 more artics, even assuming major growth in the number of riders. Honestly, I have no idea what the CTA transit planners are smoking. -Dan from Chicago (ex B/0 1969-75) |
