For a lot of city residents, young and old, short and long term, the subway, no matter how clean, efficient, and safe it has become since or will become in the future, will always be stuck in their minds as it existed in the 1970's, as that is how it is STILL portrayed in popular culture.

Circa 2008, the subway is a lot safer (still not as safe as many other systems) but trains have gotten progressively slower and more overcrowded. Everyday there is some delay or disruption. A week ago I was doing temp work in East Midtown (I live in southeast Queens). I took the X63 straight there and walked two blocks to the job site. The total travel time was about 50 minutes. Had I taken the local bus and subway then I would have to stand on the bus and the train. The train probably wouldn't have AC since the cars are over 40 years old. It would crawl from Woodhaven all the way to Queens Plaza.
